Just a note...

WOW...what a busy few weeks it's been!

How are you? What have I missed? Any exciting news to share?

Not much new here on my end...just the typical December anxiety and rush! Much like mothers and childbirth, I tend to forget every year how hard it is to be insanely busy at work (our busiest season is December, which entails 55-60 hour work weeks).

The work itself isn't bad, I enjoy it honestly...being busy and having too much to do is MY kind of thing. It's the holiday on top of it that makes it harder. All those little things that you don't just need to do outside of work, but WANT to do...fitting those in takes work and lots and lots of patience and planning. I like to think I'm pretty good at it.

BUT admittedly, there are things I'm terrible at keeping up with.
*cough* this blog *cough*

So what I'm really trying to say is...I've been thinking about you and I miss you, but I may be absent a while longer. Just know I'll be back at it in January and that I'm spending what free time I have decorating Christmas cookies, snuggling my family, and spending time with people I don't get to see often enough during the regular year.

All good things.

Here's wishing you all a very Happy Holiday and the best of everything the season brings...especially those not purchased at a store.

Close to my heart...

As many of you may (or may not) know, my sister Sandy was a Make-A-Wish kid.

Think I've mentioned it a time or two on the blog, but it's definitely one of those personal things that is so close to my heart I have to be in the right mood to share. You know what I mean? And right now, well, it's the absolute PERFECT time.

I have a chance to give back. When I think about those words, the thought of attempting to repay the extreme kindness that was bestowed upon us during such a dark time in our lives, I can't help but tear up.
The Make-A-Wish family of NC did so much for us during one of the most difficult times in our lives and they will forever hold a special place in my entire family's heart.

We were fortunate (understatement) and after many, many heartbreaking months of chemo treatment after chemo treatment, our story had a happy ending. My sister, who was diagnosed with two forms of Cancer at the age of 17 (shown here):

Just recently got married (check out her photo below from August 2011...isn't she gorgeous?) and is in full remission and our scare from so long ago is a long forgotten thing of the past.

It's times like these that I like to think back and remind myself that others just like us are going through what is likely the worst times in their lives. And they need our help to make their children's wishes come true.

Being able to help raise money and support the organization so that the gift they gave us so long ago can live on for another child is a true blessing. It means so much to myself, my family and to a truly terrific organization who makes dreams come true each and every day.

I'll admit it. I'm a coward and a NaNo virgin.

It's too much pressure for me, and with a full time job and a toddler, I doubt I would even have time to sleep if I tried. And yes, I realize those are all pathetic excuses.

SO I'm curious. Who out there is attempting the insanity this year?

Are you prepared? Are you even online to read this? How's the first day going?

(On a side note, I'm always curious whether writers get on the internet more or less during NaNo because I can see it both ways. You may not get online and post as frequently but I'm sure when you're stuck or need a break, you're surfing like crazy.)

My thoughts:

This book was like being wrapped in a warm hug...I couldn't quit smiling while reading it.

The romance that blooms between divorced mom Sandra and visiting actor Ben feels very natural and believable. Their witty banter (which I loved) and strong voices carry much of the story. I wasn't sure, even right up till the end, which way Jennifer would go with the plot, but I wasn't disappointed.

All in all, a very fun, easy read and a great story.

I don't know about you, but Fall always puts me in the mood for food!

Something about the crisp air in the evenings and the promise of cooler weather makes me want to break out the crockpot with all my favorite recipes and bake all kinds of goodies with pumpkin in them!

Along with the desire to cook comes the need to clean! Come to think of it, my husband must really LOVE the month of October...I practically (and happily) transform into Martha Stewart from October 1st through the holidays!

Really....it's a win-win!

Thank goodness I also like to hike (just took a trip up to the mountains a few days ago)...it helps to counter balance all the cooking!

So, that's what I've been doing the last few weeks...spending time in the kitchen, hibernating at home, and hiking the NC mountains.

Epiphany Part III: Moving On

So, for those of you that have been following my story thus far--you know I pretty much crumbled after my accident, right?

Right.

So what was it that finally helped me out of the deep dark hole I found myself in?

It was this:

To most people (even my husband) this sticker wasn't significant at all.

But it wasn't for them. It was for me.

It meant something TO ME.

And finding it there, on the dash of my totaled car at the tow-lot, days after the accident, was HUGE.

It was a sticker from a Christmas Eve service I went to at church the year before. I kept it under a pile of CD's in my truck, mostly because that's where it landed on my way home from the service. I didn't intentionally carry that sticker around with me. Like most car clutter, it was just there in the pile of random things that had accumulated over the years.

Until now.

The CD's, sunglasses (my favorite pair) and other miscellaneous items were strewn and broken all over the car. I found pieces in every floorboard, both the driver's and the passenger's, both front and back seats. Yet here was this sticker, light as a feather, lying perfectly on the dash for me to find as I gathered my things and said goodbye to a car who was pretty much like family.

My mouth dropped open and a weight lifted off my chest. Then and there, I gave up the burden I'd been carrying around.

You see, I don't believe in coincidences. And though the police officer at the accident scene told me how lucky we all were to walk away, for the control freak inside of me, I still needed closure. I fully believed them, knew I'd been lucky, but I still needed something else. Part of me needed to know that I was going to be okay, that I would get past this. And just as reality around me crumbled, this tiny little significant thing was what I needed to be reminded of.

Trust Love's Heart.

I knew where it came from and what it meant to me. Only me. It might not make sense to anyone else and that's okay. For me, just seeing it there on my dash was a sign that it was time to heal, it was time to move on, to be okay.

Now this sticker rides around in my new car with me as a constant reminder that we're only truly alone if we choose to be. And not just in a religious way either. We're surrounded by loved ones, but it's our choice whether or not we let them in, whether we choose to be loved or to love in return.

Love is always the path to healing.

Epiphany Part II: The aftermath

So if you missed it last week, you can click here to read Part I of this series, which I refer to as "The Accident".

Each Monday I'll be sharing with you a Kristi ramble about everything I went through and the things I've learned, so I hope you'll join me on my rambling journey!

The Aftermath: What I never expected from the accident was the emotional effect it would have on me in the days to come, the impact and control it would have over my life.

I remember snuggling up to my husband when we finally arrived home the night of the accident, with only hours to sleep before we needed to be up. I sobbed uncontrollably--the shaking your whole body type of crying that leaves you, you would think, worn out. Not me. I cried myself into non-sleep.

For those of you that are new to the blog or don't already know--I am a self admitted control freak. It comes with insane and obsessive characteristics that show themselves at the strangest of times. Like then. I couldn't shut my brain off. It replayed the scene over and over, trying to make sense of it all. The dangerous what-ifs that I tried not to think about ran through my mind anyway. After two hours and some seriously puffy eyes, I got up and took some Nyquil in an effort to get a few hours before the wedding.

At this point, I thought the emotional journey was over. That I'd gone through the bout of emotion that was probably normal for the circumstances and I'd be moving on.

I was wrong.

The wedding was fantastic. It was gorgeous and happy and everything a wedding should be, with the best of family and friends. The accident was a distant memory, out of sight and out of mind.

What I wouldn't realize until later was that it was just a momentary distraction.

Once my Dad and sister were gone and my husband was at work, I found myself alone with my thoughts, just myself and my son and an obsessively clean house. I did everything I could to distract myself but it wasn't enough. I broke down. Bad. More sobbing, chest heaving tears that I couldn't control. My mother got a spastic phone call. I hated myself. I was stronger than this, independent. I didn't understand why I couldn't just get past it and move on.

Epiphany #2 ~ Not everything is controllable.

The accident happened on a Friday night but it would be Monday afternoon before I'd get just what I needed to be able to move on and put it all behind me, but that's next week's ramble, titled "Moving on".

Wednesday Book Recommendation!

Forever by Maggie Stiefvater

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The thrilling conclusion to #1 bestselling Shiver trilogy from Maggie Stievater

In Maggie Stiefvater's Shiver, Grace and Sam found each other. In Linger, they fought to be together. Now, in Forever, the stakes are even higher than before. Wolves are being hunted. Lives are being threatened. And love is harder and harder to hold on to as death comes closing in.

My thoughts:
Wow. Just finished reading this one last night and it's easily my favorite book in the series. I don't know what Maggie's original version was like (according to her she trashed it and started over), but after reading this, I'm convinced she must have made the right call.

I wouldn't change a thing about this book. NOTHING.

For me, there was enough doubt throughout about how things would go down and what would happen in the end, that it was anything but predictable. I felt like I was on the edge of my seat, scared to death, barely breathing, as the final pages unfolded. It was reading bliss.

And the transitions between characters and POV's was excellent, seemingly effortless. It can't be easy to keep the story moving forward with four main characters to juggle, but she did it so well that it was never distracting and the book wouldn't have been the same without them all.

In fact, I'm secretly hoping (ok not so secret anymore) for an Isabel/Cole St. Clair companion novel! After reading this book, it's all I can think about. The depth of their flawed characters was completely engrossing and watching them develop was one of the main highlights of this book for me.

All in all, one of my favorite books of the year!

Epiphany #1 (In which I ramble...ALOT!)

This is a post I've been thinking about writing for quite a while, but there are SO MANY things that I want to say, so much I've learned over the last few weeks that I want to share, that the thought of writing it all down in one post became too daunting.

READ: I was afraid of boring you all to tears.

So I've decided to break up the mental and philosophical journey I've been on for the last few weeks into weekly posts for however long it takes. I'm hoping you'll come along for the ramble!

There's only one place to begin, with this:

THE ACCIDENT

What happened:
The weekend of my sister's wedding, my dad and half sister were in town from Oklahoma staying with us. We'd gone to rehearsal, practiced our duties for the next day's events, eaten some seriously tasty food, and were headed home (about an hour and a half drive).

My husband and I drove separately because my sister and I were bridesmaids and needed to be there early, so hubs, my dad, and my toddler rode to the rehearsal in a separate car. When it came time to go home, my dad and I hadn't caught up much or had time to talk, so he debated and ended up riding with me, along with my son and sister, leaving my husband following us in his car, alone.

We were on the highway, slowing down for construction traffic when it happened. My first thought was that a train had hit us. It was the only thing that made sense. One minute we were talking casually, slowing down, and the next we were thrown sideways and the sound of loud booms was in our ears.

My baby (toddler but will always be a baby to me) was in the backseat. I can't tell you what a scary thought that is and how, even now, it causes me to feel nauseous and panic. It was one of the scariest things I've ever been through and there are so many things I'm thankful for when I look back at that night.

A few ambulance trips later, we all arrived home from the hospital around five in the morning, without my car, and with only a few hours before we needed to head to my sister's wedding. It was chaos.

Those that have been following my blog for awhile probably know of the funk I'd been in, the one that creeped up and just wouldn't go away. Things (I thought) had started looking up, settling down, getting back to normal. And then this.

I don't know about you, but

Epiphany #1 ~ I don't believe in coincidences.

Meaning: Everything happens for a reason.

This freak accident has definitely been proof of that, and if you stick with me each week, I'll fill you in on why.

Nothing in life is guaranteed. It's a fact that most of us would like to ignore, one that is too scary to really think about, but from time to time it's good to remember.

So hug those closest to you today and let them know how much you care.

Eureka...err, sort of!

That's right party people, I think I *might* be making my way out of the funk.

I KNOW!

It's huge, right?

A few thoughts/self realizations as I drag myself out of the deep dark hole of funktitude,

one armful of dirt at a time.

*I am a control freak*

It's true. About everything. You can guarantee that when I'm in a mood, 99.9% of the time it's because something is out of my control, there's something not right and I can't fix it. It doesn't even have to be huge. It can be anything, though the huge things are much, much worse.

*Writing is my outlet*

No shock there, right? But here's the problem. When my well planned out world comes crashing down because I realize I can't control every aspect of it as described above, I turn to writing to express those emotions. But what happens when writers block strikes, I'm not inspired, and the words won't come?

I go deeper into the deep dark spiral of funk.

So is it really any surprise that the solution is just the reverse???

It shouldn't be, but it always is. Because I have to be patient.

*Patience is a virtue I rarely have*

I can be patient with others (to a certain extent), but when it comes to myself, I'm pretty ruthless, mostly because of the control issues. I should be able to fix it, to be happy, to pull myself out without anyone or anything else. But the reality is often I can't. Often I need friends with more patience than I have for myself.

So, after a few weeks of neediness and whininess and just plain out miserableness,

I've started to smile again. On a regular basis and everything.

And with the smiling, comes the writing.

And all those pesky things I couldn't control...the ones that were bothering me?

They're still there, only now I'm not so worried about them. I know things will work out, that it will all be okay. I don't believe much in coincidences, I happen to think everything in life happens for a reason, sometimes it just takes us longer to find them than others. But while I search for the answers and solutions, I think I'll go ahead and enjoy myself.

Isn't that what it's all about?

In a funk...

I am. I have to admit it.

Something is off.

It took me a while to really notice it, to come to terms that something just wasn't right, but it's true.

Did you know? You probably did.

Maybe you sensed my absence and wondered to yourself why I wasn't as bubbly and happy as you're used to in my posts?

I swear I'm always the last to know.

I'm pretty sure someone should invent a "funk-meter" that would allow those of us that live in denial too long to know how deep we're treading before we get to the bottom and wonder how we got there. Right?

My point is that, yes, my name is Kristi and I'm currently in a bit of a funk.

*raises hand appropriately, while looking guilty*

I do hereby solemnly swear that I will work towards getting myself out of said funk, and promise to keep the whining and negativity to a minimum whenever possible.

As always, hugs are necessary and encouraged...even bloggy ones.

And advice? Yes, please. What do you do when life gets you down, when things aren't just right?

Why I Write Blogfest!

So, my buddy Kayeleen organized a "Why I Write Blogfest" and as I have a HORRIBLE track record with remembering I signed up for these things from time to time (sorry Kristin....a million times sorry!), I thought this was my time to prove that I really can follow through if I put my mind to it!

Please ignore the fact that it's now 11:46 pm the night before, I'm at the beach for one of my BFF's weddings, and during a random conversation, I remembered this and freaked out. The important thing is that I ACTUALLY remembered!

BONUS!!!

So, back to the matter at hand, why I write?

For me, it's easiest to begin with the reason I decided after all those years of school essays and papers to put a pen to paper. And yes, it was a small notebook I purchased and wrote in and yes, I still have it. What I wrote was more of a journal, accompanied by a few poems you can find throughout the blog that I've posted before. The reason was my sister. She was sick. Bad sick. Cancer sick. She was young. Way young. High School young.

I know, right?

Don't worry, she's alive, well, and getting married in a few months. But I didn't know that back then. None of us did. I like to think of her as quite the miracle, though many who have been through this with a loved one, will probably confess that the feeling of dread, that struggle, that thought that life is so precious, it really does fade once the drama has passed.

Wait...I'm off topic. Sorry, it happens. My point? I needed somewhere for all that pain and confusion to go, an outlet, somewhere to put it, so I turned to my journal. I wrote down my feelings, created a few poems, expressed myself. And it helped. Alot. I shared it with a friend who wrote the most amazing song for my sister, one that still moves me to tears, reminds me of that time, her courage, the darkness.

And then I finished college, began to work at a real job, and the writing slowed as her health went back to normal. I'm not quite sure when I picked it back up again, but for me, writing has always been a natural place, therapeutic, my own personal getaway.

Over the years, I wrote a novel, finished it, shelved it, wrote another one. Always writing, but more for hobby than anything actually professional. I never even thought of being published.

Then one day it hit me. What if I could do this thing for real? Have something out there in book world with my name on it? It would be a dream. I love books, I love reading, I love writing, it's a natural progression and with each edit and each book I've written, I've seen myself grow. I don't know where the end of the road is, whether or not I'll ever find that dream agent, but I do know that I'll always write. It heals me in a way few other things can.

Even now, I'm sitting at a party, rock band and singing in the background *taps my foot to the music*, typing away at my keyboard with a smile. There's something about words that sets me free. I can't explain it exactly, but I bet you know what I mean.

And my sister? She's still my biggest fan and reads everything I write. She's a walking inspiration.

Hey everyone!

It's time for a writing-related-meme that's been making it's way around the blogsphere lately. I was tagged by the lovely Kayeleen, and you can read her meme entry here.

For me, writing is like...
Snowboarding

It starts with an urge, this insane desire at your very core, this obstacle that you don't just want to do or accomplish, it's more than that. There's a part of you that NEEDS to do it. Not doing it isn't an option.

You've watched the X-games (read loads of books), you've gone to the mountain (finished your first manuscript), you've seen those talented skiers and snowboarders (authors you admire) flying through the powder like gazelle's (hello NYT bestsellers).

But you're tired of watching, it's time to participate.

So you rent or invest in some equipment (find a critique group) and buy some cool-looking clothes (blog or website), because let's face it, if you're going to fall on your butt that many times, you might as well look good doing it. That first trip down the mountain is painful. You fall more than you stand (revision, revision, revision), you're butt and knees are bruised (not to mention your ego), you're body is totally exhausted (late nights), but you know what? You made it down the mountian in one piece. You survived! (first manuscript revisions down!)

So you get on the chairlift and you do it again (even more revisions), only this time you have more experience and it's less painful. Little by little you learn what to do, how to shift your weight, what foot to put first (present or past tense), what NOT to do.

You feel pretty good. You've GOT this. So you start recording yourself (querying), sure that you look like a pro, you've done your time on the ground, you know how to carve the snow, to move back and forth with speed, without falling. You're on a snowboarding/writing high.

And then you watch it back (get rejections). It's horrible. You want to cry. You want to crawl inside a closet and never show your face again. It hurts. Days, week, months go by. It doesn't hurt so much. You feel the NEED you did in the beginning, that basic instinct, that desire.

You realize the video (and agents) doesn't lie. You still need work. And you've come to terms with it, you know it's the right thing to do. So you go back at it with a passion that wasn't there before. You practice like never before. You NEVER give up. Because giving up isn't an option.

Each trial, each mountain gets you closer to that goal. I haven't reached the end of either adventure yet, but I'm ready and the passion is there.

Wednesday Book Recommendation!

Blameless by Gail Carriger

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Quitting her husband's house and moving back in with her horrible family, Lady Maccon becomes the scandal of the London season.

Queen Victoria dismisses her from the Shadow Council, and the only person who can explain anything, Lord Akeldama, unexpectedly leaves town. To top it all off, Alexia is attacked by homicidal mechanical ladybugs, indicating, as only ladybugs can, the fact that all of London's vampires are now very much interested in seeing Alexia quite thoroughly dead.

While Lord Maccon elects to get progressively more inebriated and Professor Lyall desperately tries to hold the Woolsey werewolf pack together, Alexia flees England for Italy in search of the mysterious Templars. Only they know enough about the preternatural to explain her increasingly inconvenient condition, but they may be worse than the vampires -- and they're armed with pesto.

My thoughts:
Before I begin, I should let you know that this is the third installment in this series, so if you missed my reviews of the first two and want to read them, you can click here (Soulless) and here (Changeless).

The main character in this series, Alexia, is easily one of my favorite main characters ever written. She stands out in a class all her own and makes each story a joy to read. She's charming, witty, courageous, not to mention hilarious, and of course, polite when needed.

For me, these books are genius and never cease to make me smile and laugh out loud. The humor is perfect, the plot is unique and fresh, and the entire cast of characters relatable.

The only complaint I have is that it always ends too soon. And I did deeply miss Lord Maccon in this installment, but alas, so did Lady Alexia, so we were together in that.

Obviously, I am totally in love with this series, and have to admit how shocked I was at first, to find how many very DIFFERENT reviews were on Goodreads. I always find it interesting when there's a wide mixture of love/hate type of reviews for a book, especially ones which I particularly liked. I think as both a writer and a reader, it's an important thing to notice.

It just goes to prove how very different we each are in what we like and how we perceive things, which in my mind, is a very good thing. If we all loved the same thing, imagine how boring that would be. Though, I'm also mentally taking note that as an author, thick skin is a must.

It was a VERY busy weekend around the Chestnutt household,

but one event on Friday stood out above all the others.

At around 3:30 in the afternoon,

I became an AUNT for the very first time to this little sweetie:

Precious little Audrey.

She may only be 7 pounds, 4 ounces, but she's already won all our hearts.

Mommy, Daddy, and baby are all doing well!

Wednesday Book Recommendation AND a Giveaway!

My Thoughts:
So I've read some pretty awesome books so far in 2011, but honestly, this one might be my absolute FAVORITE. I'm obviously infected with the Delirium at this point...and you know what? I don't care. It feels GOOD.

I smile just thinking about this story and to say it's a cheery, happy, feel good book is totally inaccurate. Parts of it were terrifying, chilling, stressful, and I spent a good part of it worried about which direction Oliver would go. And I loved every minute.

The way in which she describes this world where love is a disease that can be removed scientifially, makes you nervous from the very beginning. The more comfortable with it her main character is, the more uncomfortable the reader becomes. The material is thought provoking without being too technical or pushy. The concept is fresh and realistic.

The suspense of it all had me turning the pages, HAVING to know what happened and at the same time, terrified to find out. In essence, this book did what all really excellent books do, it consumed me, sucked me in, and took no prisoners.

Now I'm left raving about it's deliciousness and waiting for the sequel. (Okay, and convincing everyone I know that they MUST read it.) The Delirium has begun.

The Wednesday Book Recommendation!

Hi friends!!!

Sorry for my extended absence as of late...things in my work and personal life got a bit out of control in the month of May, but I'm starting to feel more grounded, so expect to have me back commenting away and updating more regularly! That darn LIFE thing can be tricky from time to time...seems like some days it's all or nothing, right? But all good news on my end and I wouldn't trade it for the world.

So, how about we get back to our regularly scheduled Wednesday activities?

The Replacement by Brenna Yovanoff

Mackie would give anything to live among us, to practice on his bass or spend time with his crush, Tate. But when Tate's baby sister goes missing, Mackie is drawn irrevocably into the underworld of Gentry, known as Mayhem. He must face the dark creatures of the Slag Heaps and find his rightful place, in our world, or theirs.

My thoughts: Perfectly creepy and unique!

The descriptions within this book made the town of Gentry, rotten soil and all, come to life in a very horrific way. Brenna does an excellent job of world building. She starts the reader off slow, endearing us to the main character, Mackie, who little by little, is drawn down into the murky magical depths of the world beneath the one we see, as he fights for his own life, as well as those of the people he's come to consider unlikely friends.

There aren't many books out there right now that truly have that fun creep-factor that keeps you awake at night, shivering from the thought of what the next page might hold. This book, for me, did just that. And the way the story grew creepier with each turn of the page was magic...it wasn't until near the very end that I realized just what a hold the book truly had on me.

I foolishly put it down a few chapters from the end, my eyes tired from an hour of reading and my day to day routine. But my mind wouldn't shut off. The town of Gentry called to me. Visions of creepy crawly things had me wide awake, staring at my bedside clock, willing myself to just forget about it, to close my eyes and get the rest I need, to finish it the next day.

But sleep wouldn't come. I HAD to know the end, HAD to know that everything was okay, that it would work out, even though part of me was terrified of what Brenna may do, how she was going to end it. So I did what most book-obsessed readers do. I CAVED.

With a sigh, I gave in, warned the husband that I couldn't sleep without finishing it, turned on the light, and read every last word. The many cups of coffee consumed hours later and the dark bags under my eyes from too little sleep were definitely worth it.

The uniqueness of this book is what I loved most and I would definitely recommend it.

I can't wait to read more of Brenna's work in the future and I hope she continues to keep me guessing and staying up late at night to find out just what she has in store.

Let's go Red Sox!

So.....anyone besides myself stay up and watch that game???

I mean, WOW. Talk about a night of baseball worth watching! It reminded me so much of why I love to watch and why I get so obsessed.

A few highlights:
***Salty (Saltalamacchia) got his first HomeRun in a Red Sox uniform. Now, I'm a HUGE Varitek fan, but I'm still rooting for Salty to find his groove and I'm taking this as a clue that his hitting may be making a comeback. Plus, there's nothing better than seeing the team get pumped up when one of their own has a milestone moment. I love the looks on everyone's faces, the congratulations, the look of glee...

***Posada - Lots of drama surrounding this catcher turned DH during the game. He bowed out on Saturday an hour before he was supposed to play and is having a hard time with his new place
on the team. (Insert whining here). Towards the end of the game, he came up to the plate and was walked, though not intentionally. The crowd went wild, and even though I'm not a Yankee, I love seeing fans support their players...

***A-Rod - I know it's not nice to actually hate people (at least that's how I was raised), but this man pushes the envelope for me. So when he missed the slow ball that rolled between his legs last night and my favorite player, Pedroia, went right on running past him to score, I'll admit it, I laughed, I cheered, I yelled, I LOVED every minute.

***Pedroia - Speaking of Pedroia, he had atleast one stolen base last night, maybe more, and if you know him like I do, the fact that he wasn't thrown out was pretty huge. He's an awesome player, but a base stealer? Um, not so much. It was a good night all around.

***Lester - The pitcher continued his winning streak last night and with the win, has the highest career winning percentage in MLB history, but that could change next time he's up to the mound. It's still a big freakin' deal if you ask me to even be up there for it and he's had it before, just proof of the kind of pitcher he really is.

***This win put us back at 50/50 for wins/losses and considering the way the season began, we're feeling pretty good about this.

***Need I mention the BEST thing about this game??? It meant we swept the Yankees, which is never an easy feat!
OBVIOUSLY, at this point, we can all agree I'm obsessed.

The problem is that game's like last night's only validate that there's a reason. ;P

The Wednesday Book Recommendation!

Possession by Elana Johnson

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Vi knows the Rule: Girls don't walk with boys, and they never even think about kissing them. But no one makes Vi want to break the Rules more than Zenn...and since the Thinkers have chosen him as Vi's future match, how much trouble can one kiss cause? The Thinkers may have brainwashed the rest of the population, but Vi is determined to think for herself.

But the Thinkers are unusually persuasive, and they're set on convincing Vi to become one of them...starting by brainwashing Zenn. Vi can't leave Zenn in the Thinkers' hands, but she's wary of joining the rebellion, especially since that means teaming up with Jag. Jag is egotistical, charismatic, and dangerous--everything Zenn's not. Vi can't quite trust Jag and can't quite resist him, but she also can't give up on Zenn.

This is a game of control or be controlled. And Vi has no choice but to play.

Before I begin, I have to admit that the day this book showed up on my doorstep I literally did a happy dance and jumped online to tell on my booky friends because I was THAT excited. Thanks to Simon & Schuester for the amazing and suprising arrival of this ARC in my mailbox!

As an avid reader and fan of Elana's blog, I'd been salivating over this book for quite a while and thrilled to get a copy early, but at the same time, I was nervous to start it because I had such high expectations, you know?

Not to worry! It was full of all the Elana Awesomesauce you would expect and it definitely didn't disappoint! And the cliffhanger towards the end? Killer.

I hate spoilers, so definitely won't give anything away, but she had me flipping through the last half of this book at an amazing pace. The sarcastic and witty main character Vi comes off as very believable and relatable, Jag the bad boy is totally crush worthy and hot, with just the right amount of tension, and the science fiction world she creates very unique.

Not to mention the fact that I can't get the word techtricity out of my head. It has a cool vibe to it, a ring that makes me doubt it isn't already a real word. It reminds me of the way Elana has created this alternate reality that has a way of being very, very real.

Kudos to an awesome debut author and to the long wait for Book #2.

The Wednesday Book Recommendation!

The Iron Queen by Julie Kagawa

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

My name is Meghan Chase.

I thought it was over. That my time with the fey, the impossible choices I had to make, the sacrifices of those I loved, was behind me. But a storm is approaching, an army of Iron fey that will drag me back, kicking and screaming. Drag me away from the banished prince who's sworn to stand by my side. Drag me into the core of conflict so powerful, I'm not sure anyone can survive it.

This time, there will be no turning back.

My thoughts:
I intentionally waited a while to write my book review because I KNOW there are not enough appropriate words to really describe how much I loved every single page.

I hoped maybe time would give me more perspective, that I would be able to eloquently and intelligently tell you how fantabulous it was in great detail, but alas, all I want to do is gush and force everyone to read it, so I've come to the conclusion that it just isn't possible for me. I'm too giddy.

Here's what I can tell you: Julie keeps raising the bar for this series...I've loved each book even more than the last, which hardly seems possible since she had me hooked with the first one.

I've told all my booky friends about it out of a selfish need to addict others and have someone talk to about the series. I like it that much. (And everyone I've convinced to get it so far has loved it as well!)

And I won't lie, this one had me crying like a baby. There were many tears and strange looks given to me by the husband as I read into the wee hours of the night.

The end, in my mind, was absolutely perfect. I'm not a big fan of spoilers, so I will give nothing away. Just know to have the kleenex ready.

Now comes the dreaded wait....how much longer???

It's hard to believe it's REALLY, finally here!

I'll be watching a little baseball game against a little team you've probably never heard of:

This is officially my first time seeing my boys play in their hometown and my very first time to

legendary Fenway Park. I can hardly wait.

And what can be better than going to Fenway to see the Red Sox play the Yankees?

Going with two of my favorite people! We're leaving the little man in the

capable care of family and spending the weekend in Bean Town with my good friend (and former college

roommate) Shelly and her awesome husband (and fellow Red Sox addict) Jay.

The Wednesday Book Recommendation!

Ok, so it's been a while since I've had a Wednesday Review post, so I figured, why not come back with not only an AWESOME recommendation, but a book I believe is totally OBSESS worthy?

I just finished the Iron Queen last night and WOW, that review will be up next Wednesday, so be sure to check back, I swear I keep thinking she can't top herself and she keeps proving me wrong. Each book is better and better.

The Iron Daughter by Julie Kagawa

Half Summer faery princess, half human, Meghan has never fit in anywhere. Deserted by the Winter prince she thought loved her, she is prisoner to the Winter faery queen. As war looms between Summer and Winter, Meghan knows that the real danger comes from the Iron fey—ironbound faeries that only she and her absent prince have seen. But no one believes her.

Worse, Meghan's own fey powers have been cut off. She's stuck in Faery with only her wits for help. Trusting anyone would be foolish. Trusting a seeming traitor could be deadly. But even as she grows a backbone of iron, Meghan can't help but hear the whispers of longing in her all-too-human heart.

My Review:
Before I gush and go into how much I LOVED this book *pets cover*, let me first say that as far as sequeals go, this was EVEN better than the original. If you're like me and you really like something (hello Iron King), then you get a little nervous when the second book rolls around, because that's a lot of hype to live up too. AND we all want to love it just as much, but I never expected to love it more. AND trust me, I do.

Now for the book...what can I say without giving too much away? The pace is perfect and keeps you moving along and flipping through the pages...like the first book, the characters are relatable and believable, never making you doubt the world Kagawa has created.

And Ash? *sigh* Lovely as ever.

Kagawa further explores the relationship between Meghan and Puck, something that when I think back, wasn't fully explored in the first book. Then again, maybe it was and I was blinded by Ash, totally possible. Have I mentioned I'm team Ash yet? Could you tell? Where was I? Oh yes, Puck. There were quite a few moments I ALMOST switched sides, which is pretty huge, so KUDOS to the well written scenes that tugged at my heart. One in particular *wink, wink*.

The new characters (Rowan, Leanansidhe) mesh well with the ones from book One and definitely add an interesting layer to the mix.

All in all, it was one of my favorite reads of 2011.

Across the Universe by Beth Revis

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

My Review: I'm apparently on a roll in 2011 and this book is at the top of my list of favorites!

It's one of those books you read and end up thinking about for days and days. The entire world Beth creates and the concept behind it is just phenomenal. And that first chapter??? I dare you to put it down after that. DARE!

She swaps between two main characters, both from very different worlds, with differing perspectives, which I think, really adds to the story. Elder (the boy) grew up on the ship and is chosen to lead the next generation while Amy (the girl) grew up on the Earth we all know, but was frozen and released earlier than she should have been.

Her change between the two was so seamless that it was always obvious whose head I was in and it enabled her to really dive into both cultures and the problems with each of them.

All in all, without giving anything away, it was a fast pased, action packed read, totally unputdownable, and very original. I will MOST DEFINITELY be continuing this adventure and can hardly wait.

On a sidenote: I was lucky enough to meet Beth at a signing in North Carolina and she was hilarious, down to earth, and funny. It just makes the book THAT MUCH BETTER. (As if that's possible.)

Wow, a night full of awesomeness!!! The Breathless Reads Tour Update!

Wow.

You know those occasionally unexpected times in your life where everything just snaps into place? You have a great time, you make fun new friends (*waves to Charity*), you enjoy every little thing about it? Every moment isn't something super special or anything extraordinary, but it all works and you find yourself smiling and drinking it all in?

That was Friday night for me.

The. Best. Ever.

I offer you hubs as proof. (Who by the way, after the event, should definitely win Husband of the Year.) I knew I was going to buy a ton of books, because, well, I have bloggy friends that live farther away, right? *waves to bloggy friends* So I basically talked (um, bribed) him into coming with me and helping me lug them through the signing line and keep everything straight. (We both got a night out and he got dinner). He never expected to enjoy it. Never.

But enjoy it he did. We honestly talked about it for days. The interview portion was interesting and all the authors were genuine and hilarious.

But the best part for me? He totally "got" it. Something clicked. He was able to get a glimpse of why I love to write and why I feel this need to do so. And that is beyond cool.

I haven't been to too many signings (just a handful), so I wasn't sure what to expect either, but I have to give it to the authors, they totally captivated me!

For those of you not able to make it, I thought I'd share a few of my personal impressions and favorite things each of them discussed (from memory, not word for word).

Ally Condie:
My impression: Ally seems like one genuine, down to earth, athletic, caring lady. The stories she shared about her boys were sweet and I felt like we could be best friends. (And as a mom, I of course, loved them!)
Favorite Tidbit: She shared with us that when she doesn't feel like writing, she thinks about having to fold and match all those white socks (she has three boys) and she finds her motivation. It just seemed so real, so funny, and so true, that it struck a chord with me.

Andrea Cremer:
My impression: Andrea seems like the type of girl that never met a stranger. Her energy is HUGE and contagious, her smile always THERE, and her whole personlity is bubbly. Not to mention, the girl has the BEST red hair I've ever seen. *jealous*
Favorite Tidbit: She's a historical professor! I think I was so shocked by it that it just stuck out. To still teach AND write as many books as she does, just wow. The girl is a machine. It must be the energy. I hope to be published one day just so I can convince her to hang out with me. LOL. And maybe take me shopping...her outfit was so put together and cute!

Kirsten Miller:
My impression: Ballsy, kick butt (like her characters) girl from New York who has a hilarious self-depracating sense of humor. Her stories were honestly funny and she had the crowd rolling numerous times!
Favorite Tidbit: Which one? She had so many great stories. The one that made me laugh the most was about her thoughts when she encountered a female tax driver in New York, which is rare. (Kirsten said she's lived in NY 20 years and only had 3 female cab drivers if that gives you an idea.) She said the woman had a strange name (the ones listed in the back of the cab) and honestly, I can't remember what it was, but it was something dramatic like Brezalda or something, and Kirsten said her first thoughts were that this lady was a spy, she did something hilarious I can't remember, and raised Chinchillas. (I'm not doing the story justice, but I laughed SO HARD, because honestly, I could see it too. Those of us that write, understand.)

Beth Revis:
My impression: Like Andrea, Beth is very bubbly and her excitement is contagious. It's hard not to smile while listening to her talk and she is one funny girl. I really enjoyed hearing about how different her writing was from the rest of the panel. (And because we're both alike in that we start at the beginning and write in order...)
Favorite Tidbit: She names some characters after her former students (Beth was a teacher before writing) and she's killed quite a few off (intentionally I think). It was hilarious. She totally admits to telling said students she killed them off. That has to be revenge in the sweetest form. On a sidenote, some of her students came out to the signing and they were sooooo awesome. A few were in line in front of me and seeing how excited they were was just really moving.

Brenna Yovanoff:
My impression: Brenna was definitely the most quiet and soft spoken. She seems kind, honest, and like a free spirit, very creative, and listening to her talk, leaves you intrigued.
Favorite Tidbit: This tidbit actually stood out the MOST to me because I found it so interesting. I was so moved by it that I bought her book on this one statement alone. When discussing how all the authors wrote (in order or more spastic, one chapter, scene at a time to fit together later), Brenna responded that she writes line by line, usually out of order, but if she can't find just the right word, she'll leave an open space in a sentence and come back later to finish it. The word has to have just the right number of syllables and work. I was sold. I thought her answer showed how, while the story captivates many of us, the words captivate her. And I just HAD to give it a try.

All in all, good times and GREAT authors. I can't wait to read all of their books! I think I'll appreciate each page more having met them in person. What a fun group of ladies!

Goodbye sweet Borders...

Many of you have probably heard about the

200 Borders stores that are closing due to the latest bankruptcy filing,

but have you looked at the list?

I was SHOCKED.

Every single store that I know of in my area is closing.

EVERY.

SINGLE.

ONE.

Including the one I frequented several times for my critique group meetings.

It's sad.

BUT, on the bright side, because let's be honest, what's life without one?

I went to the INSANE liquidation sale on Sunday and braved

the masses to get a few new books.

Were the deals worth it? Um, not really.

Only 20% off and we waited in line for over an hour.

But, you know what?

This hassle was for you, Borders. You'll be missed.

Here's my goodies:

Now to get through the ones I already have waiting, so I can get to this beauties! ;)

I'm taking a brief 2 week hiatus from my personal blog.

Have no fear, I will (for sure) still be visiting and lurking around all my favorite bloggy places, but with everything going on, in order to focus my efforts, something has to give. ;)

SO, with that in mind,

GO PACKERS!

Honestly, I'm not sure what I'm excited about the most:

the family bonding,

the good food,

the commercials,

OR the game.

Yeah, you're right.

Probably the food.

(followed closely by the family bonding, which we all know makes the food taste even better.)

It's basically the one time a year I eat wings.

And I can already smell the brownies baking.

Don't even get me started on the spinach artichoke dip and bread bowl.

Yumm.

Katy of Vision Quest Fail

A little about Katy: Hi, my name is Katy and I've been blogging since 2009, but I wasn't into book blogging at first, I saw Angieville and Tynga's blogs, and decided I'd try out book blogging, and here I am. I'm really into Urban Fantasy and YA Fantasy, but occasionally I'll read a YA. I also recap The Vampire Diaries every week, I'm Team Damon! I really like interviewing authors I love, and I sometimes do giveaways. I have two going on right now, and an upcoming interview/giveaway with Erin Kellison author of Shadowman.

When I'm not reading, I'm a huge hockey fan. I love the Pittsburgh Penguins and The Washington Capitols even though they're rivals. I'm also an aspiring business student, I want to go into Real-Estate one day. I'm a notorious book pusher when it comes to people I know in person, I've relentlessly pushed The Hunger Games and The Black Dagger Brotherhood on several people. I just hope I can inspire someone to read a book I loved, that's kind of why I blog.

Confessions of a Vampire's Girlfriend by Katie MacAlister

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This was my first Katie MacAlister book, or actually, bookS, since this is really two stories in one.

The first story (Fangs) was good, but I was hesitant and unsure what to think. For whatever reason, I wasn't drawn enough into the story and never really "lost myself" in the pages.

BUT, having said that, by the end of book two (Circus of the Darned), she HAD me.

The chemistry between Dark One, Ben, and GothFaire 16 year old, Fran, is DEFINITELY what keeps you reading through the pages. Their banter is fun and flirty, their arguments hilarious, but realistic.

The wit and humor spread throughout is spot on and her cast of characters (although sometimes stereotypical) is colorful and just plain fun. They're all quite lovable and by the end, feel like family.

All in all, I'd classify this as one of those easy reads that just makes you smile. I will definitely be continuing Ben and Fran's story!

Writerly Revelation #2:

You are not ALONE.

We all know writing can be a very isolated activity.

Most of the action and work happens in our own heads, right?

Long hours spent typing away in front of a monitor

or maybe spent scribbling away on a worn out notepad?

It can get lonely if you let it.

You can feel like no one will ever read what you write,

or understand the need for words that you have somewhere deep inside of you.

But then you stumble across something that makes you think.

Something that gives you hope.

Someone who understands.

Maybe it's a Critique group of other writers.

Maybe it's the wonderful word of book blogging.

Maybe it's a friend of family member who is supportive.

Maybe you don't know yet.

Rest assured, us writers, are never truly alone.

Anytime you're down,

or anytime you feel hopeless,

I encourage you to take a look around.

You'll find others here and there, in the most suprising of places,

who would love nothing more than to encourage you and

share their own similar stories.

You never have to feel alone on this literary journey.

Unless you want to, of course. ;)

And then, well, we'll all understand that too.

That's what friends do.

The Wednesday Book Recommendation

The Body Finder by Kimberly Derting

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Wow. Apparently I am on a roll in 2011 and everything I pick up is fabulous!!!

I literally read this book in 4 days because I couldn't put it down. Just to give you some insight into my life: I work full time, have a toddler, and write in my free time, so 4 days to finish a book is pretty much UNHEARD of. Yes, it was THAT good.

Derting is amazing and has done a fabulous job of making these characters all seem very real and relatable, but in my opinion, the best thing she does in this book is balance out the totally creepy, heart pounding scenes, with sweet, heart melting ones.

I'll admit it kept me on the edge of my seat and a few times I was actually terrified of turning the page, torn between wanting to know what happens and at the very same time, terrified to find out!

The relationship between Jay and Violet is also so, so sweet, and feels very real.

All in all, just a really great read. I can't wait for the second book!

Writerly Revelation #1

Writing Revelation #1:

Your first draft is only the BEGINNING.

Sure, it sounds simple. We all know that, right? Writing 101.

BUT, if you're like me, this becomes your mantra, something to repeat to yourself whenever doubt sets in or you want to do something you already know is insane.

A few things I've learned along the way that I constantly remind myself of:

DO: Send your work to trusted Critique Partners and Beta Readers.

DON'T: Do this just once and consider your manuscript "clean".

DO: Take a break after that first draft.

DON'T: Proceed to query the entire literary world just to "see if there's interest".

DO: Start to research literary agents and where your work will fit.

DON'T: Find the perfect agent and query because you KNOW he/she is perfect and will love you and your manuscript regardless of where it is in the process of revision.

DO: Print out pages when you edit.

Things often look different on paper than on a computer screen and it gives you a fresh perspective.

DON'T: Be too hard on yourself.

We've all had "those" moments. You know the ones I'm talking about. The ones where you swear what you just wrote is total gold and is revised to the extent of perfection, only to find out days later, it sucks more than anything else you've ever written and you have no idea what you were thinking. It's okay, I'm pretty sure this is normal. It's normal, right? Right?

DO: Enjoy taking the time making it right.

Revisions and edits take time and it's easy to see them as a burden. Perspective is key. Enjoy making your work the best you can and have fun with it. It will show in your work.

DON'T: Constantly tell the world how much you hate revising/editing.

Okay, really, I just needed a don't to list. I have to be honest, some of the blog posts people write on how miserable editing is are some of my favorites. We have a bond and we need to share our trials and tribulations. Or, so I think. Just don't overdo it, you never know who else may be reading.

AND LASTLY, I think this bears repeating.

DO: Wait until you've beaten your ENTIRE manuscript into sparkly gloriousness BEFORE querying.

This one is hard. REALLY hard. Trust me.

DON'T: Query anyway and give up when you get rejections.

I'm pretty sure most authors have queried a project too early. (Um, guilty!)

The difference is how you handle it. Beleive in your work, don't give up, and just take it as a sign that it's time to get down to business. NEVER give up. Did you hear that? Never. Ever.

Sidenote: We're each on a different timeline as to the lessons we've learned, what we've written, and what we've come away with. So why not share? Writing Revelations is my new Monday installment that chronicles my journey up to this point with writing. I've learned SO MUCH since starting to take it more sersoiusly. Bloggers and this community of writers has been invaluable. Yet, I still learn something new each and every day. It's one of the magical things about life. There's always something new around the corner. Embrace the lessons that come.

LOVED

the new look and feel of it.

Our all time favorite scenes?

Those with Steven Tyler.

Love him, love his charisma, love the way the new judges all seem to jive together.

Always been a big J-Lo fan too, so love her energy as well.

(How absolutely stunning is she? And sweet!)

And I'm also a big fan of how well balanced everything seemed to be. As a crier, I appreciated the heart breaking stories that were told, but not dwelled upon. Yes, I teared up, but I didn't feel as though they were trying to kill me with the sadness of it all. Just the right amount of emotion for me.

And I may already have a favorite too.

I know it's still early, but I'm already on board.

The Wednesday Book Recommendation

Paranormalcy by Kiersten White

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Ok, so I'm probably the LAST ONE to finish reading this, but I want to join the masses in saying how much I loved it.

This book was full of awesome!

If I had to pick my favorite thing about it, it would definitely be a tie between Evie's often spot-on-humor and Lend. Because, well, Lend's character was just *sigh*. Yeah. So, so sweet.

The interactions between the characters felt real and well paced, and I ended up falling in love right along with them. I only wish I could've had Lend all to myself.

The world Kiersten creates in this book is also very original, and described so well, that it sucks you right in. Her creatures are fun and seem to have a fresh twist, especially the Faeries, which are downright creepy at times.

All in all, a VERY fun read, and I can't wait for the next book!

The crime scene:

Note 1: Contact case on counter (complete with contacts)

Note 2: Burts Bees Handcream (which has nothing to do with this, but it has magical dry skin

healing powers that I thought you should know about.)

Exhibit A:

Sure, he may look harmless enough at first glance, but trust me, at 5AM when you happen to wander into your bathroom, the world a blur because your contacts are still on the counter, splash water on your face, brush your teet, and turn around, this is the LAST thing you are expecting to see hiding in the corner.

The most disturbing part:

Apparently I'm not a screamer. No sound came out of my mouth. Sure, I gasped (think dramatic intake of breath that is barely audible), and jumped. And had he decided to talk at that very moment, I may have even passed out. Yes, I know, VERY courageous.

So all those times I made fun of people in the horror movies for not screaming or running have finally come back to haunt me. Apparently those are my kind of people. Who knew?

Apparently Mickey, that's who.

An overactive writer's imagination is definitely NOT to my advantage in this kind of situation. And because Mickey happens to work better on tile than carpet, this may not be the last time it happens, but atleast now I'm on alert. Nightly bathroom checks have been enforced and I've removed Mickey from the premises twice since the "incident".

Who needs horror when you have a toddler around?

And trust me, that gushing is tamed WAY DOWN. I actually took a few days after reading this before writing my review, just so I wouldn't feel the need to squeal and say incoherent things about how hot I think Prince Ash is and how he stole my heart. See how that worked for me?

Seriously though, this book suprised me in a lot of ways and I needed those few days to ask myself, why this book? Why the mad love? And I think I found the answer.

When I was younger, I read the entire Chronicle of Narnia series. Besides my Nancy Drew books (love them), it was the first taste of fun reading I had and I became an addict. The sense of adventure, the creativity, the MAGIC. This book, for me, brought me back to that feel. It's the first faerie book I've read, so that may have something to do with it as well, but the characters felt real and honest, and the storyline swept me away. It made me forget I was reading and I became submersed (read: obsessed) in this world Kagawa created. I tore through this book at a rapid pace and didn't want to put it down.

Now I find myself in a dilemma. Hubs has banned me from buying new books until I catch up on the drawer full of new ones I have yet to read, but how can I read anything when the second book is in a bookstore waiting for me to pick it up? It's hard. And he KNOWS it's coming, we joke about it frequently. We're both waiting to see when I'll crack!

Exactly three years ago today I was in the hospital and terrified out of my mind!

I'll spare you the details, but it was a day and a moment that will forever live on in my memory.

It was the day I fell in love with the tiniest person imaginable and prayed I wouldn't screw him up.

I remember pulling away from the hospital and looking at my husband with wide eyes.

The conversation went something like this:

ME: "Wow, there's a baby in the backseat. How weird is that?"

HUBS: "I know, I can't believe they just let you take them home afterwards. Seems strange."

ME: "We're not even really certified, do the birthing classes count?"

HUBS: "I hope not, we failed at swaddling."

AND then we just died laughing. I'm pretty sure we laughed so hard we cried. Because in all honesty, at that moment, even though we planned everything and prepared the way you were supposed to, we both felt in over our heads.

I like to think we've been doing pretty well since that day. Sure, there's been a few bumps here and there, a few frantic unnecessary trips to the doctor and ER, but all in all, I feel like we've done a decent job.

And my little man is growing up before my eyes, making me more proud with each passing day.

There's a good chance I will cry at random intervals today. Never expected that either, but it happens every year. Please tell me one of you does this too. Am I alone?

So, HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my baby boy.

Mommy loves you more than you know!

The Wednesday Book Recommendation

Crescendo by Becca Fitzpatrick

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I liked Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick, but I LOVED Crescendo!

Her follow up novel, in my mind, was even better than the original. What can I say? I love bad boy Patch and Becca found a way to create some intense suspense and longing between her characters that kept me flipping through the pages at a frantic pace.

It was my last read of 2010 and definitely one of my favorites of the year!

2011 has quite a nice ring to it, don't you think???

As I turn the pages of the calendar (and by turn, I mean throw out and start new), I can't help but wonder, where did all the time go?

2010 was gone in a *FLASH*.

Which brings me to the question of, how did I spend my time, and did I do it wisely? (Being an optimist, there's really only one answer here and I'll let you guess.)

BUT, the new year isn't as much about looking back as it is looking forward. In the past, I've made specific resolutions and tried to keep them up, but like most of us, by February they are mostly dead in the water and by March, they are forgotten entirely. This year, I think I want to be more general.

YES, I want to take the opportunity to start fresh, with new thinking, a new attitude, new goals, BUT, it should really be things I want to focus on each and every day.

I want 2011 to be about more about the person I am, my actions, my thoughts. I want to be the wife/mother/friend/co-worker/blogger/stranger that is always there to help and lend a smile. I want to care ceaselessly and love wildly, no matter the costs. I want to practice patience and humility to the point that they come naturally, without gritted teeth, foolish pride, or hurt feelings.

This year, for me, it's a more inward look at myself and the person I want to be, the person I know I am, the person that in times I feel is lost in the day to day struggles of everyday life.

Um, not to say, I won't be participating in reading and writing challenges throughout the year, amongst any other things that float my way, because, if you haven't noticed, I have an addiction to books. An addiction I totally find healthy and fulfilling. (Even if the hubs has banned me from buying new ones until the piles begin to dwindle. Bummer!)

So, what about you, friends? What has the new year brought to your minds? Resolutions? Hope? Stress?

It definitely hits me as a magical time of reflection and all things new. There's something special about this time of year, something in the air, do you feel it?

If you're like me, it passed by in a flash, leaving you whip lashed, but smiling.

Work is still insane, but finally starting to settle a bit, so I just may get back into the swing of things soon.

A few of my favorite things/moments about Christmas 2010:
*The snow! It's the first white Christmas I can ever remember having.
*Along with the snow, came snowman making with my little guy...a definite favorite of the holiday weekend.

*Having my entire family (all 9 of us) attend the Christmas Eve service at my church
*Catching up with old friends and their kids at my mother's Christmas Eve party
*Starting our own family traditions with the tot

*Staying in my fuzzy pants/PJ's for two days straight!
*Playing with all the kiddos toys! (he got some seriously cool stuff)

One Crazy Cool Yule

"Twas the Night before Christmas" has lots of nice rhymes
But I fear that the tale doesnt fit modern times.
What is a kerchief? My dad wears no cap.
He snores the whole night, no way its a nap.

They tell me that Santa is coming tonight.
Hell be flying in here on a sleigh. Yeah, RIGHT!
When I was much younger I believed all that stuff,
Now that Im older I know its a bluff.

As this Christmas eve is going so slow
I sneak down the stairs to watch HBO.
Nothing is stirring, its quiet down here.
Securitys on so theres nothing to fear.

All of a sudden I hear the floor squeak
Someone is coming, sneakety, sneak.
And then as my heart leaps up to my throat
I see a fat man in a funny red coat.

He stands by the table and looks through the house
And takes from his pocket a tiny gray mouse.
He says, "Ho, Ho Ho, I truly believe,
There must be a mouse in each Christmas eve."

His belt buckle shakes as he laughs, look at that.
My gosh this jolly old guy sure is fat.
He looks up. He sees me and gives a big smile.
Says, "I came to see you. Lets talk for a while.

"You're one grown up child that doesn't believe
That Santa Claus comes on each Christmas eve.
You're a big girl. Your minds filled with doubt.
Its simple, without me the joy is left out.

"I remember the time you sat on my knee
A smile on your face, eyes sparkling with glee.
Don't you remember the thrill you felt then?
With a little belief you can feel it again.

"Santa Claus comes for each child at the start.
The rest of their lives I live in their heart.
If you are a youngster or wrinkled old guy
You still can hear sleigh bells ring cross the sky."

He turns as he says, "Will you please come out here?"
And there on the driveway stand eight cool reindeer.
They all nod to me and then snort in chorus,
"Who is this pretty girl now standing before us?"

I wave as I tell them, "I'm Anna May."
As the big burley guy crawls into his sleigh.
He says, "Its my new team, a real with-it crew.
I'll let Captain Cosmos give their names to you."

"Heres E-mail and Hat Rack, Cool Dude and Charley,
I'm Cosmos, theres Awesome, Brucie and Narley.
Head Cat is Santa, the North Poles his home,
We see him all year cause we hang out in Nome."

Then they take off and fly to the roof
Tap a short rap and give a "high hoof."
All turn and shout, "Tonight reindeers rule.
The eight of us wish you a crazy cool Yule."

Then Santa shouts, "It's true some things change.
But believe in the basics." As he speeds out of range.
Then I hear repeated, as my willing ears strain,
The words I now love, my favorite refrain.

"Twas the Night before Christmas" has some things outdated
But The Story, dear folks, is not overrated.
Throw open the window, and rejoice in the sight!
"Happy Christmas to all and to all a good night."

ALSO, before I go, my absolute favorite Christmas song, and in particular, Clay's version. I know what you're thinking, and NO, I'm not a Claymate. (Not that there's anything wrong with that at all, but not my normal taste in music...however, this version is just gorgeous and moving. I could listen to it all day.)

Okay, okay, I know, right?

Honestly - whether busy season or divine intervention, last night the number popped into my head and I CAN'T get it out of my mind!!! I've been thinking about it for 24 hours straight.

What's it mean? I certainly don't know. Possibly my overworked accountant brain on steroids? MAYBE.

Who knows. The number came to me in a random moment of consciousness. I didn't ask for it, it just appeared,begging to be heard. It didn't explain itself, tell me why it was here, what it was doing, what was going on, it just proclaimed itself.

Well, OK. Number 14,157 You have arrived. What do you want to do now? Huh? Have you thought of that?

Meanwhile, I think about LOST episodes and what the numbers "meant" to the survivors. What does this mean? Something? Nothing??

I don't know BUT that's not the point. Maybe the point is that I DON'T know.

Maybe I'm overworked. Quite possible.

Those of you that have not been informed, here's a typical day in the life of Kristi in the last few weeks:
*Get up at 5:30 AM - Hope that you showered the night before (you have decided every OTHER night will suffice for bathing)
*Get ready for work - clean face, put on respecatable clothes, makeup, shoes, and get in car
*Get some kind of coffee (whether from work or home- doesn't matter, only the fact that you have consumed caffeine of some sort)
*Work for 11-12 hours straight
*Come home literally at dark (like when you left) and call husband to let him know you're on your way
*Arrive home at around 7pm (toddler has already eaten and hugs you like he hasn't seen you in weeks, breaking your heart instantly, but making you love your spouse more than ever at the same time for being there when you can't)
*eat dinnner (even thought toddler has already eaten), watch Christmas movies like you're interested, snuggle appropriately
*Go to bed around 10pm (with toddler still awake but fading fast)
*Read book until you start to doze off with toddler in bed next to you (not because he won't sleep in his own bed but because you miss him while you're at work...and my favorite book by far is Crescendco!!!)
*Fall asleep, get up at 5:30 AM and repeat

HONESTLY, my last couple of weeks in a nutshell and why I've been blog MIA for awhile.

But, why tonight? Why the numbers????

Well, #1 - I had a work Christmas party tonight and am a bit blitzed (true story) and #2- I've been meaning to do this for weeks and haven't had the time.

SO, the big question in my mind is how does an ETERNAL OPTIMIST deal with soooooo much stress??? And it is BIG stress. And I think, during the holidays, we can all relate. Whether or not we are working 60+ hour weeks, we all have our normal jobs, plus buying and wrapping giftts, plus holiday parties, plus obligations, plus all the added stress that buying the PERFECT gift brings. (A type personalities I'm talking to YOU!!!)

Here are my answers:
1 - What other options do I have? (Honestly, what's the point in being angry or upset???? What good does it do?)

2 - Um, I work with AWESOME PEOPLE. And I don't just say that...I totally do. I could write a book on their awesomeness, but I'm an accountant, and let's be honest....dude, that TOTES wouldn't sell.

3 - MARY CHRISTMAS - Okay, so, I kind of stole this from my church's lecture series this month, but I think not only does it make me giggle with it's cleverness, but it's truth. Whether or not you are religious, this holiday is all about LOVE and GIVING of yourself to others, and if that doesn't give you the warm fuzzies, I don't know what does.

4 - Apparently the number 14,157, which I have no idea what it means, but one day I will!

5 - Ok, so I have a precious toddler at home that I use to de-stress, but honestly, life is good! It's a blessing! And so are you! Look around at what you have....find something to be thankful for, and focus on that! That's yours and it's SPECIAL. Appreciate life.

6 - Nothing HAS to be perfect. Give it up. Perfect is just an idea of how you think things SHOULD be. A type personalities (such as mine) get hung up on this. Christmas is this great holiday that is filled with traditions and perfect things that we need to reciprocate in order to be filled with the awesome. SO NOT TRUE. You know what? Know one who matters really cares what you buy them...they care about the fact that you thought of them and got them something. Quit stressing about the perfect gift and think about the person! Something thoughtful and handmade will often trump something expensive!!! It really is the thought that counts!!!

7 - Don't take advice from a drunk blogger! Maybe the best advice EVER!!!

ME? Tomorrrow AM I will be at work, coffee in hand, working without pause, wondering what in the world I was thinking the night, drinking all those drinks and laughing out loud? BUT you know what I was thinking??? That I love people and that they are each special and that I'm happy they are in my life. I'm proud of them all and that I'm part of a blanket of life that is weaved patch my patch into something greater. I'm part of the fabric...and happy to be a piece, if even for a night.

I've missed you blogosphere!!!

The Wednesday Book Recommendation

Hey everyone! How are you?!?

Before I get into this Wednesday's book review, I need to let you in on a totally unfun-not-really-a-secret secret. I know, tantalizing, right?

If you've noticed my recent blog absense, both from posting and commenting, I just want you to know that I promise to return to normal in January. The truth is, my full time job has a busy season that starts right after Thanksgiving and lasts right through to our deadline on December 31st. So, the 11 and 12 hour workdays have been leaving me dragging and tired, with little time for anything (not even writing...GASP!) but spending the holidays with my family.

Am I complaining? Okay, yes, maybe a little, but honestly, I love my job and what I do, so it's a necessary evil. But, I promise my darlings that I will be back to my peppy normal self come January and I will try to come around from time to time to say hello. But if you don't see me, just know I'm thinking about you!

Now, onto my latest book review...the good news is that no matter how busy my life gets, I always unwind before bed with a few pages of a good book. So, here's my latest.

Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

First of all, I LOVE this cover and the title is full of awesomeness. I moved this to the top of my TBR stack for those two reasons alone, because I was totally intrigued.

But I'd be lying if I told you I wasn't a little let down by it. The story was good and it definitely kept me interested, but there was something missing for me that is a bit harder to describe. I never "lost" myself in this book. Throughout the reading I was reminded that I was indeed, reading. After reading so many GREAT young adult books, this one just didn't have the same flow and unputtdownableness of the others. Not to say it wasn't good, because it was, it just wasn't GREAT in my mind.

My favorite things about it? The creative storyline and the characters, Jem in particular. They were flawed and lovable, just the way I like my characters to be. The story was unique and interesting. The Shadowhunters themselves are very, very cool.

In summary, I would definitely recommend this book, it was fun and different. As a reader, I plan to continue reading Cassandra Clare's other books, because as an author, her creativity is superb.

Musical Tuesday

Good morning all!

Thanks to all my new followers, both here and on Twitter!

It's time again for musical Tuesday!

I thought today I'd let this new video and song help me revisit a bit of the past.

As some of you know (and some probably don't), I've had a long time crush *cough* *obsession* *cough* with Gavin Rossdale and the band Bush. Love, love, love them. Have every Bush album (my favorite is Razorblade Suitcase, thanks for asking), Institute album, and Gavin's solo album.

All of them honestly brilliant. Seen them live quite a few times and there's just nothing like it. Nothing.

I found this last week and just had to share:

Wow. Every time I hear it, it reminds me of Bush back in the day and it gets me pumped up. I can (and do) listen to it over and over some days.

Time for another confession!

I resisted for so long. I really did.

Almost a full year. If you don't believe me, I offer the following post as proof.

But, as of last Saturday, October 30th, I decided to drink the kool-aid.

AND as I suspected, it was delicious.

I'm totally addicted and I don't even know what I'm doing yet.

Yes, it's official.

I'VE JOINED TWITTER!!!

I haven't even tweeted (is that the appropriate word??? I have no idea) much to be honest. I'm just enjoying adding friends and hearing what others have to say. I knew I'd be instantly addicted. To be honest, that's why I resisted for so long. But, I have to admit, for writers, there's SO MUCH information you can find daily. Agents and friends are constantly posting useful links and articles. There's an abundance of short clickety-clicks to suck your time away into a huge black hole.

So, please, for the love of all things community, if you are a long time Twitter user and have some tips for a total newbie, please comment below. I have no idea how to post a cute little link or what all these hash marks are about. Basically, I can tweet words and read what others say right now. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Musical Tuesday!

A little something different this Tuesday!

Believe it or not, hubs and I actually got out of the house and had an official date this past Friday! For those of you with toddlers at home, or any kids for that matter, you probably understand what a big deal this was for us. Or maybe you're better about finding time than we are. ;-)

AND since we went to a concert, I thought the awesomeness was fitting for my usual Tuesday musical/inspirational mix. Plus, I love when bloggers post photo tours, so I figued it was my turn!

Am I rambling? I think I am. Moving on.

This night was actually a surprise I'd planned for hubs three months before and I didn't tell him who we were going to see or even where we were going before hand. Or that we had 7th row seats!

More fun that way I think.

I know I've posted about these guys before, but seriously, they put on an amazing show.

The performance was great, but unfortunately a little short. I could've listened to them all night, but they were the opening act for Billy something and Carrie Underwood.

Not to fear though, we got to meet them afterwards and get an autograph (and a hug!).

I seriously felt like a giddy teenager. It was awesome.

They're one of the few bands that hubs and I can agree on. We're both very passionate about these guys and spreading the word.

Carrie Underwood also put on an amazing show. We kind of went into it thinking we'd stay for just a few songs and leave (sorry Carrie fans, I love her as a person, but just not my taste in music), but we ended up staying for the entire performance and encore. She seems like such a down to earth girl and is totally tiny and gorgeous. Her outfits were to die for and I left wanting to wear something sparkly. Her voice is amazing and she is a daredevil!

The boys ended up coming out again during her performance for a duet...

Good times I tell you, VERY GOOD TIMES.

I can't wait to see the boys headline their own show.

Linger by Maggie Stiefvater

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I loved continuing Sam and Grace's story and this book definitely didn't disappoint!

Maggie's writing stands apart with it's often poetic feel, her style absolutely beautiful.

My only complaint was that with 4 POV's, there were times I had to flip back a page or two to remember who was talking.

Sunday Ramblings

Full thoughts just aren't happening tonight, so it's time for a random rambling post of what's going on in my head. Fun, right?

MUAW HA HA! (weak attempt at an evil, scary Halloween laugh...don't worry, I have a full week to perfect it.)

*First of all, go Texas Rangers! In case you weren't already aware, this is the first time in franchise history that the team has made it to the World Series...it's post season history in the making. As a hard core Red Sox fan, the game in my mind, ended on a perfect note. And because my team is out of it and I have several friends and family in the Texas area, I'm backing them! GO RANGERS! (plus you just have to love Hamilton, right?)

*Apparently when I revise/edit it's important to print it out occasionally to see just how bad things are. Why don't they look like that on my computer screen? Chapters 1 and 2 have now been revised like, 35 times. I just can't get them to flow right. This whole paper vs electronic thing has me wondering about E-readers. I wonder if there's a difference in the way we read and comprehend them in comparison with real books.

*I made Asparagus Soup for the first time last weekend and came to this conclusion: Buy it canned. Less work and tastes just as good. It seems wrong to have to cook something, put it in a food processor, and then cook it again. Don't get me wrong, it was tasty, but just not worth the two hours of effort. See below picture for the prettiness of my effort (and because all that time seriously needs to be documented). Feel free to comment on how glorious it looks.

Okay, I admit it, it looks a little like pea soup of the Exorcist variety.

*I'm totally multi-tasking right now and watching the Vikings vs Packer game. Good game, but a lot of strange calls and things.

*I have a surprise date night planned with the hubs this Friday (plans are a surprise anyway) and I'm like a giddy teenager! I'm horrible at keeping secrets, so I'm actually quite proud of myself! Only a few more days!

*I'm addicted to the Book Thief. Not my usual kind of book, but it's really good.

*Another thing I'm addicted to? Running in the crisp fall weather...absolutely lovely. The park near my house has a two mile loop around a lake and it's just peaceful.

*Anyone know a good place to buy petite sweatpants? Seriously. I have this problem every year. I'm five foot and most petite pants are still too long. It seems REALLY wrong to have to get sweatpants hemmed and I'm too old to pull off the "cut off" version I used to sport.

*Can you believe the holidays are around the corner??? What happened? And what did I do this year? And is it just me or do the stores keep putting Christmas stuff out earlier and earlier? So strange to see Christmas stuff next to the Halloween decorations. Don't get me wrong...I love Christmas, but come on!

Okay, only six minutes left in the game...gotta' run!

This past weekend I re-fell in love with this man: Marc Broussard.

Amazing voice, amazing sound. His album Carencro is pure genius. Every song is fabulous and his voice drips with soul. It's just good stuff. Very good stuff.

It's certainly inspired me and allowed my mind to drift off to places only found in my latest manuscript. It's mellow and moody for sure.

The Wednesday Book Recommendation

Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I had a hard time getting into this book at first...it was a slow start for me. BUT a friend of mine finished it and raved about how good it was, so I kept reading.

SO GLAD I DID! (And thankful for good, wise friends!)

I became hooked half way through the second chapter and honestly couldn't put it down. I love when a book does this. (NOTE: There are only seven chapters and the first one is a doozy.)

BUT you know what's even better? When a book makes you think AFTER you're finished. When you can't stop thinking about the relevance of the story. It did that, without me realizing it until the very end. I still think about it.

There's a very thought provoking, moving, relevant message submerged in this story and I think it's one we could all benefit from reading. This book makes you think about the kind of person you are and the kind of person you want to be and what kinds of things in life can hold us back and change everything.

Teaser Tuesday!

I'm baaaa-aaackkkk!

How is everyone???

I figured it was only fitting to return from my unplug with a Teaser Tuesday, right?

I was able to get alot of revising and reworking done last week and it seems I'm on a roll! Of course, I feel this WIP editing should really be called "The Overhaul", because that seems much more accurate. Everything is changing for the better and so far, I'm really happy with my progress.

But enough of me droning on, let me jump into it.

We've been having some wet, rainy weather here in NC the last few weeks, so I thought I'd share a similar scene from my current WIP, Sybil, from Chapter 7--Coming to Terms.

Ever feel like this?

Pretty funny, right?

Unless you happen to be the dog with the glow stick bracelets on your head like a tiara, listening to the crazy toddler tell you, "DON'T MOVE!"

In that case, I'm pretty sure you just feel like a fool. (Van Gogh's face here is priceless, is it not? It screams PLEASE HELP ME!)

AND I kind of feel like this, this week, so I can relate.

During my editing/revising fiesta I realized (with the help of others) that I need to rework a few chapters of my manuscript during the process. And by rework--I mean destroy, rethink and rewrite.

BUT you know what?

I'm embracing my glow stick halo of shame and doing it happily. Because deep down I know it needs to be done and now I can't sleep until it's better. I stayed up way too late last night recreating scenes and brainstorming, scribbling away on a notepad like a mad woman.

AND you know what?

When I gave up and called it a night, I slept like a baby. It was therapeutic in a way.

So, here's to wearing that glowstick of shame proudly this week!

Maybe past time? A look back into my blog archives found my last confession-related posting was dated April 2010.

So here goes:

Normally, I'm one of those writer's that LOVES the rough draft stage of writing. There's something about a new shiny story that is SO captivating and thrilling! Editing? Um, not so much. I've been known to describe editing as hell on earth. And I fully meant it.

Until now.

I ENJOY EDITING!

*gasp*

I know. I was shocked too. I don't know what happened. I have a sneaking suspicion it has to do with my outlook or perspective in relation to the fiendish task, but why question it?

I plan on riding this wave of happiness out until it ends. It's nice to finally understand what those insane-editing-loving writer's are talking about. Making your story better with each agonizing change can be refreshing, if you let it.

In non-writing related confessions:

I like pickled okra and boiled peanuts.

It's weird, I know. I've made fun of hubs for years and in retaliation, he's been getting me to try odd things I think are gross. So far everything he's made me try, I've liked. Next up: pickled eggs. I'm totally stalling on that one. Sounds nasty, but he swears I'll love it. He's been right about everything else so far, so why can't I just give in and give it a go??? Perspective is a funny thing in life, isn't it???

Sometimes we cling so hard to what we THINK is right, we don't open ourselves up to the possibilities that surround us.

Why I heart Fall!

Okay, okay, I know fall isn't here quite yet, but I'm so excited that it's around the corner, I can barely contain myself.

Fun fact: The first day of fall this year is September 22, 2010 for the United States, Canada, and most of Europe. Or so says my quick google search. *grin*

In celebration of my most favorite upcoming season, I present to you:

Kristi's Top 10 reasons Fall is full of Awesome:

1 - Cooler Weather (obviously). I don't know about you, but I'm done *glistening* for another year. Bring on the cool breeze and nice walks in the park.

2 - The changing of the leaves. A trip to the mountains is a must each and every year to view the leaves in all their splendor. I relax just imagining it.

3 - Festivals full of hay, parades and lots and lots of fun! See below example of last year's pure joy...

4 - Halloween! Dressing up + candy makes us all feel young again.

5 - Pumpkins. Have I mentioned my pumpkin addiction yet? Pumpkin spice latte', pumpkin bread, pumpkin muffins, roasted pumpkin seeds, pumpkin candy...honestly, you can't go wrong. However, fall reminds me of these two not-so-healthy Halloween favorites of mine:

6 - Football! I don't love it as much as baseball, but hey, that's a given. Going to a game, bundling up with a cup of hot chocolate, and watching from the bleachers is pretty nice too. And I'll check out Favre ANYDAY. Like maybe tonight. Big Game.

7 - Crockpot recipes!!!! Everything in the crock pot tastes better in the fall and winter. I'm looking forward to Pot Roast, Beef Stroganoff, Split Pea Soup, Vegetable Soup, Chicken-n-dumplings, BBQ Chicken.....wow...I'm kind of hungry just thinking about it.

8 - Jeans! I'm ready to bring back the jeans and long sleeve tees!

9 - Thanksgiving! Something about getting family together to celebrate just can't be replaced. I like that everyone gets together to eat and the main focus is spending time with one another...it seems to be the one time a year it's okay to overeat and do nothing. And one of the few that I force myself to sit still.

10 - The return of television! All of the good shows are coming back and my DVR is ready!

A weekend for relaxing?

Um, not for me. I'm beginning to think relaxing is an aquired skill I don't quite have yet. You'd think it would be easy to just cook out, sit down by the television, and just CHILL. Right?

My brain and to-do list never stops. Never. But I did have a very lovely weekend!

And seeing as how it was Labor Day weekend, the name itself implies work. That's my story and I'm sticking to it! We finally tackled the bathroom renovation we've been planning for weeks. I've had two bargain mirrors we bought sitting in my kitchen for over three weeks. (Sidenote: love Gardenridge for great, value priced mirrors for the house!)

BUT I did have time in between home improvement projects to sneak in a little reading of this:

I'm going slower during this read and really savoring every page. I don't want the story to end and a part of me is postponing!

AND we did cook out both hotdogs and hamburgers over the weekend, catch up with a good friend, and spend time with family.

PLUS last night I baked some of these:

They don't look nearly as pretty as Kim's picture here, but they were just as tasty! (Just had one for breakfast...yummers!)
